  14. REGISTERING SCALE AND THE 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
  15. ============================================
  16. Scale is not free. Sites using this software in business MUST
  17. register it. Contact the author for site licensing information. If it is for
  18. personal use only, please send a few dollars. Or you can consider the
  19. following.

  21. 7.0 PLUS Utilities is a package of all (more than 25) System 7.0 utilities
  22. I have written. You can get the disk with all of them NOW (not wait until
  23. I decide to upload the next program) by sending $29.95 to me. This will
  24. register you for all the software, will get you a disk of the software, and
  25. an update to the PLUS Utilities when it rolls around. It’s a pretty good
  26. deal. You should register your software, anyway, so why not do it
  27. like this? And it’s a lot cheaper this way.

  33. USING SCALE
  34. ============
  35. •  If you use Scale, please please please send me a note. My addresses

  37.     information in the above section on registration.

  39. What Does Scale Do?
  40. -------------------
  41. •  Scale, a drag-and-drop utility (Drop Rob-Box), counts the number of files
  42.     and folders in a selection (including files and folders within the directories
  43.     you have selected), and calculates the total logical and physical size of that
  44.     group. Lets you determine the size of selections without getting info and
  45.     breaking out the calculator.
  46.  
  47. •  Read further if you plan to use Scale with aliases.
  48.  
  49. Using Scale
  50. -----------
  51. •  Drag sets of files, folders, or disks into the application, “Drop Box-
  52.     style”. Scale will scan folders and disks provided, and will calculate
  53.     the required information for all contained files and folders, no matter
  54.     what their depth in side the selected directories. Drop Boxes require
  55.     Apple Events, and thus System 7.0 or higher.

  57. •  Scale’s count may differ from the Finder’s count, since Scale includes
  58.     the sizes of invisible files in its calculations. So if you get information
  59.     on a folder with a custom icon in the Finder, that count may differ
  60.     from that obtained using Scale.

  62. •  Double-click on Scale to see the about box information.
  63.  
  64. •  Alerts are very annoying, especially in Drop Boxes. So there aren’t any. As
  65.     a rule of thumb: if it doesn't work, there must have been an error.
  66.  
  67. •  To cancel processing, just type a command-period. Files already processed
  68.     will remain modified.
  69.  
  70. Scale and Aliases
  71. ----------------
  72. •  Since the Finder resolves all aliases when you drop them into a Drop Box,
  73.     Scale can only think that you dropped the target (not the alias) in to be
  74.     counted. If an alias is within a directory you have dropped in, the actual
  75.     size of the alias is calculated (not the size of the target or parent file).
  76.  
  77. USING DROP BOXES
  78. =================
  79. Drop Boxes are applications (drag-and-drop utilities) which can take advantage
  80. of System 7.0’s Apple Events. To use them, just drag a file over the application
  81. icon just as you would drag a file over a folder to move it into that directory.
  82. The Drop Box is then opened and processing is done. The program then quits.
  83. You can also throw in whole directories and disks. You don’t have to throw in
  84. just one, either. Select a whole bunch of files, directories, or disks, or any
  85. combination of the three, and dump them in. The Drop Box will scan for
  86. files of the required type and modify them accordingly. All files in all
  87. directories within those dropped in will be modified. Any aliases dropped
  88. directly into a Drop Box (not inside a directory) are resolved by the Finder
  89. and thus their target (parent) is modified.
